“Not surprising, since there are very few cultures where transgenderism is openly accepted; the largest, I dare say, being Thailand.”

According to Wikipedia, and the research I've done, the country or territory with the most LGBT rights are as followed: Canada, Norway, Israel, Denmark, Greenland, Sweden, Belgium, The Netherlands and Spain. I'm linking to a Wikipedia article that list current LGBT rights around the world. If, by some chance I did miss any, please let me know or fill in what is missing. Thanks, and I hope this brings more discussion.

Also, more on Hieronymus's question - as with paedophilia, I wonder if people are born transgender. Likely very little research exists.

Actually, research does exists, but I believe it's just getting started. “Not surprising, since there are very few cultures where transgenderism is openly accepted; the largest, I dare say, being Thailand.”

Actually, research does exists, but I believe the research is just getting started. That being said, let me make a few points of my own.

ALL transsexual people are BORN transsexual.

Transsexualism is a congenital neurological intersex condition, in which a child is born with the physical anatomy of one gender, but the neurological makeup of the other. Medical research, as well as over a century of personal testimony from transpeople, shows this.

'Transition' is the name given to the treatment for this disparity; since it;s not possible to alter the brain to match the body, treatment involves altering the body to match the brain, or at least as closely as possible. It's the ONLY effective treatment, and the only choice involved is WHEN to start treatment; a transsexual person can't live a normal life without it.

Contrary to popular misconception, a transsexual person doesn't 'become transsexual' after surgery, or after hormone treatment ; in fact, some transpeople, and some medical authorities, argue that a transsexual person ceases to be transsexual once treatment is completed, since the disparity that defines transsexualism no longer exists. Others maintain that transsexual people are transsexual from birth to death.

And another popular misconception is that there are more transsexual women than men (figures of 3 to 1 are often quoted); in fact, there are roughly equal numbers of both, but transwomen are generally more 'visible', hence the apparent difference.

I'm pasting a URL to something which you, Hieronymus or anyone else might want to read. It gives a brief overview of the condition.

Here is the URL: TearS - facTS about transsexualism: - http://www.kaffeine.freeuk.com/korner/bluboox/tears.htm
