The answer is, no, it will not automatically bid to your max.
Lets say there is something going to $20 now, and you bid it to $25.00. Assuming also that $20 was the previous highest bid, then the listing would show yours the highest bidder at something like $21.00.
But lets say you bid that item up to $70. If someone else came and bid it up to $60, then you had to make MORE than $60 to win it.
If you are bidding on something of high value, I suggest waiting until the last 30 seconds and bidding at the last minute. This is called sniping and is allowed. If it is of trivial value, and you don't want to wait until the listing is over, or if you are not going to be at the computer when it ends, then you may just want to make your bid the highest that you would be willing to pay.
So you bidding on some balloons? A beach ball? A Halloween costume ;)?
