OT Question re: eBay

I've never bought anything off eBay before, but am considering something now. When they ask for my 'maximum bid,' they won't automatically put my bid at the max will they? It's just the amount they won't go over when doing the automatic bidding, right? Only working their way up in increments when somebody else bids against me?

Thanks! I hope I win this one without having to pay too much!
