One of the many nails in the coffin for my faith in secular and scientific authorities (as opposed to overtly religious or political authorities) was a PPG/VPG study by Blanchard et al. touted in the New York Times under "Gay, Straight, or Lying?" As the title suggests, the study supposedly showed that men, unlike women, can only be either gay or straight; that male bisexuality basically does not exist. Not surprisingly, political gays of the "get off the fence!" mould loved this study.
When I questioned the study, methodology and interpretation, I was dismissed as a "science-hating creationist" and the like. Naturally, the same people had no problem with "science hating creationism" in 1972 provided that it helped get homosexuality (homophilia) declassified as a mental disorder by the secular priesthood known as the APA. In 1972 the Bible of psychiatry was evil and oppressive, but today we are supposed to take it as holy writ.
