I made a mistake one day, a few months ago, which got me started on this research: I was sitting in my car waiting for a friend when I heard this child scream in fear then laugh. I didn't think anything of it. A brief moment later, I hear the exact same scream in fear then the laugh. Curiosity got the best of me because the fear sounded quite serious. A third time hastened my steps but the following laugh had me wondering because it was exactly like the first two.
I rounded a fence corner to see construction equipment and a huge tractor being worked on. A large metal thing was grating against another piece of metal as it rotated slowly. The child's scream and laugh was actually made by the metal parts. I laughed at myself but, later, began this investigation into why I am so attuned to children's voices.
