I will grant, we don't beg the State for permission to be who we are. But that form of activism is a dead end. The political gays tried it and look how they've ended up.

What I mean here is that they've been co-opted. The "dead end" is that as a "protected class" that protection has strings attached. They can't accomplish anything that doesn't benefit the ruling class.
