(1) You are right about the problems when one does not belong a church or a local family, however it should be noted that the church in many of these communities is more about social networks than faith. On the one hand, these "Christians" will adamantly defend some really funny beliefs that are obviously not true, but on the other hand they will also have strong beliefs that directly contradict those beliefs. The average person has a talent for hypocrisy that some of us just cannot match, and I don't even think it is deliberate for most of them. They are just able to fully believe contradictory things.

(2) I know it can be very hard to be in a dependent situation, especially when one is willing to work but has been prevented from doing so. In your case you are kept unemployed due to irrational social stigma and (indirectly) by government policy, and so I do not consider it any fault on your part to game the system in order to survive. They committed the crime, so they should pay the price, although they will never see it that way.
