Oh well, yes, I am not necessarily saying that the history of the West was an example of everything that is Good in humankind. But it left a large impact on American culture; and was based on essentially self-reliant individuals and small groups entering a space that was unknown to them, and many times hostile (whether from environment or the previous inhabitants). That is what I mean, in spirit at least.
