Self-reliance comes from the frontier.

The Indians were self-reliant in their defiance of the whites.
The whites were self-reliant in their conquest of what was unknown territory for them, and many times hostile (both because of Natives and geography).

The first settlers of the East might have had some of that feeling. But many more settlers, over a much larger space, and with many more descendants, were the ones who took over the West.

There is even a Western movie genre. There is no Colonial movie genre.
