It has nothing to do with the competence of gays (which is no more or less than the competence of straights). It's a numbers game -- do the gays and their allies outnumber the gay-bashers? Perhaps, sometimes, but I'm willing to bet that it would be much safer to stay in the closet in your libertarian utopia.

And self-reliance doesn't have to be absolute? Oh, good. Then you support the pooling of resources and the provision of a social safety net from the more to the less fortunate (socialism). And no, that doesn't require a state.
