Homosexuality doesn't have to be particularly tied to effeteness. That's a stereotype which obviously goes well with "protected" minority status, but the Stonewall Rioters, or going further back, the Sacred Band of Thebes show what a social construct it is.

Of course, few doubt that lesbians can don fatigues and combat boots, though ironically that stereotype is just as artificial. Most women who are consciously attracted to their own sex aren't inherently any less 'lipstick' than women in general. Not that lipstick has to be at odds with fatigues and combat boots anyway (see Sarah Palin, or even if her public image is mostly phony, millions of rural women who resemble her public image).
