"I have been in socialist countries, in Scandinavia, and they are so far ahead of us intellectually, morally, ethically, socially, and financial-security wise that it is almost beyond comprehension to the untraveled."

Funny, when I talk to Scandinavians, one of the things they tend to ask me is "Why do Americans keep talking about our having a successful socialist system when we got rid of it twenty years ago?"

Certainly the Scandinavians do many things well, and have one of the more civilized societies on earth, but in spite of a basically law-abiding and open-minded people they couldn't make real socialism work. Talk to them today and they are quite adamant that it is their capitalism that has made them strong. To be sure, their government is much more involved in day-to-day life and in redistributing incomes than in the United States, but it is a far cry from what it was in the 1980s.

Also, despite American conceptions, the Scandinavians have some of the highest rates of private ownership of firearms in the world. Finland is second only to the United States. (The most violent parts of the world tend to have some of the lowest rates of private ownership of firearms. It's harder to massacre and intimidate townspeople when they're all armed.)
