Then how is it that many people in secular countries are religious? There isn't a state forcing them to!

This is beside the point. Nevertheless, I doubt as many kids would embrace fundamentalist religions if their parents lacked the power to impose their religion upon them. I don't know this for certain, but I would be willing to bet on it. No other Western nation seems to be as religious as the U.S. anyway.
