It's not an amazing leap to think of the state enforcing the rights of youths as opposed to oppressing them, because the state once enforced the power and authority of slave owners over their slaves, a situation that is now fully reversed.

Which took decades… People don't change that fast - that includes bureaucrats.


Parents and the state only rarely end up in adversarial roles,

But arguably, the times they do are more important than the times they don't. It is very easy to conform to the prejudices of the day. It is not easy to live in a different way.

As certain twins said: "You can stay afraid, alone in the dark, but at least I'm out here, in the light. At least I'm not afraid to say what I think…". That family (btw, open to intergen relations) was a target of state power advocates, unsurprisingly.
