I cannot imagine a class-divided society operating without a state, but I can certainly imagine classless and moneyless societies operating without one. The state is necessary in a class-divided society to enforce class rule on the labor class, to preserve order and relative peace by force of arms in a system of inequality that breeds poverty and crime, to mediate differences that arise between members of the ruling class, and--in political democracies like the U.S.--protect civil rights (at least in theory).

It's not an amazing leap to think of the state enforcing the rights of youths as opposed to oppressing them, because the state once enforced the power and authority of slave owners over their slaves, a situation that is now fully reversed. What really boggles my mind is the many parental power advocates who want the state all but smothered out of existence when it's the state that generally enforces their power and authority over their kids. Parents and the state only rarely end up in adversarial roles, and the reason we often see parents decrying the power of the state on these boards is because of the prominent discussions of youth liberation. After all, parents and parental power advocates want the state enforcing their power (which they euphemistically refer to as "rights") but they loudly balk at the thought of the state enforcing the civil rights of their children. In other words, what's good for the goose is definitely not good--or fair--for the gander as far as parental power advocates are concerned.
