"Young people should have full control over their own money and not have to surrender any of it to their parents at the latter's demand."

In the early part of the twentieth century there was a child actor named Jackie Coogan, who earned relatively huge amounts of money but was penniless before he was old enough to vote; his parents had squandered it.

The publicity from this, once it became known, resulted in California instituting legislation requiring production companies to put the child's money in a trust fund, available to the child, and only to the child, at age 18, and to no one before that.

The parents were still legally required to support the child to that age.

In the 1930s, a little girl named Shirley Temple was ranked in the top 5 among money-earners. As in, one of the top 5 money-makers in the world!
