In fact they shouldn't exist at all, just as they never existed right thoughout time. There should be no such thing as "child labour laws" to begin with. They are a complete anathema in my books. There should be no extra laws over young people working as there are with adults, just as there should be no separate ways of treating the right to have sex, or to drink or to do anything else. Once some law is prefixed with the word "child" I have no time for it at all because it is patently ageist in its mentality. As far as I'm concerned it's a purely domestic matter up to the parents to work out with their offspring. If my son reaches the age of 5 and he wants to work no one has any fucking right to stop him working, and they have no right to impose different sets of working standards on him than if he was an adult. I know you and I have completely opposing views in regards to different other aspects revolving this matter, particularly when it comes to parents, but at least I think we can agree that government has no right to stop children and youth working.
