Strong EU powers want to expand data storage to stop child porn.

While the debate over Norway will implement the EU's controversial data storage directive rolls and passes, powerful forces are working in the European Parliament to extend the scheme.

Google and other search engines will be forced to store information about who searches for what.

It is the essence of a so-called written statement ("declaration underwritten 29, pdf). The aim of the proposal should be to combat child pornography on the Internet.

- Such written statements is one of many instruments, the European Parliament to express their opinion in a case. In this way, small groups or individual politicians take the initiative beyond the normal workflow in the parliament, often to start a debate, "explains DLD-opponent and the EU member of parliament Christian Engström in a blog post.

When the document is submitted it is up to parliamentarians to decide if they will support the initiative within three months. If the document is supported by the majority is the proposal of Parliament official view of the matter. Otherwise, rejected the proposal.

As the European Parliament has 736 representatives of the 369 signatures needed for the statement to go through.

"Written Statement 29" is so far signed by 324 MPs.

A separate campaign for the proposal is created on the site smile29.eu.

Adopted this means nothing in legal terms set, "says Engström. But it means a confirmation of the parliament's official view, and is an important political signal to the European Commission.

European Commission decide whether to take action as a result of this, or not.

Several Swedish EU policy supports the expansion of data directive, and they do it for the sake of the children.

- This [child pornography, journalist comment.] Is a huge humiliation of the children. Then take a step back and not be afraid that one's own personal interests can be monitored. Even if you do not get all the material you have to try, "said Christian Democrat Alf Svensson, according to the European portal, type dn.se.

Christian Engström, which represents the Pirate Party of the European Parliament and Lena Ek from Center Party, however, strong opponents of the proposal, which they believe infringe citizens' privacy.

They have gone to the counter and demands in a statement that the EU Commission looks at the implications of data storage.

- For me it is unacceptable and a violation of human rights that the state completely uncritical to store all traffic data. I do therefore resistance data storage directive in every possible way, of course, also to work with parties that run the same line, "said Lena Ek.
