First, there are plenty of examples of active war zones that are due to lack of government and the rule of ad hoc gangs rather than state-sponsored warfare (such as Somalia, Sudan, etc.), although certainly there are plenty examples of state-induced hellholes as well (Iraq, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe). Second, I was only making that distinction to demonstrate how we are relatively safe in modern societies. I wasn't making any statement about whether the state is or is not responsible for the times when modern society breaks down.

Finally, my statement that 'the alternative is unthinkable' referred only to the immediate alternative actually occurring in Australia and being proposed by some on this board -- that vigilante justice be allowed to substitute for jurisprudence in certain cases. I was not making any broader statements about alternative forms of society or government that might be effected through social change. I fully support such movements, and hope that someone does, in fact, 'smash the state' at some point in the near future, providing that vigilantism does not form a prominent role in the resulting social order.

My post was only meant to clarify my opinions on very specific issues to counteract the bizarre theories of our resident lunatic. You might want to reconsider how much you read into such posts in the future, and next time you might take context into account when reading such a post. Otherwise, I am likely to get stuck in an infinite progression of having to clarify my life's philosophy to posters who feel they can extrapolate it from off-hand comments I make in response to a very specific issue.
