Even then, appearances can be deceiving. Eyewitnesses often get things wrong. And who makes the judgement of what appropriate reprisal would be? Is death an appropriate punishment for kissing someone against their will? Is a broken nose justified for forced frotteurism? I don't have much faith in the justice system, but the alternative is unthinkable.

Violence is justified only to prevent an imminent threat, and then only proportional to the threat.
