For what its worth the average rating was 4 out of 5 stars. But the distribution is even more telling with over half the reviewers finding it 5 out of 5 stars. So one had to search very carefully to find the few who rated it that low. ( Well, if there wasn't a button that allowed you to cherry-pick reviews by their rating.)

But all this is pointless because Amazon reviews are written by any old schmoe. There's not even the sort of consensus editing that allows the majority to correct glaring errors like on Wikipedia ( the source of all truth ;p )

I'm more familiar with their DVD reviews, but its the same process. And I've seen some doozies creep into the review section and stay there.

So I'm not sure what on Earth the above exercise was supposed to prove. Although I would worry about anyone who allows their views of the contents of a book to be shaped by a click 'n' post review submitted by a stranger.

I'm reminded of the character in Whit Stillman's film Metropolitan who said;

“You don’t have to read a book to have an opinion…I don’t read novels. I prefer good literary criticism. That way you get both the novelists’ ideas as well as the critics’ thinking. With fiction I can never forget that none of it really happened, that it’s all just made up by the author.”
