desktop background image I select online, tiny?

Here's the problem.
When I find a nice image I like, and I click "set to background", the image appears on the desktop but no bigger than 2 inches by 2 inches in the center of the screen (and many of the image files I'm selecting, are large - some are 2400 by 1600). And I tried (in desktop tools) changing between center and stretch and tile settings. I can stretch it, but then it's warped and blurry, but does take up the whole screen. And I can tile, but the image don't get any bigger than 2 by 2. But when I choose the center setting, it stays ridiculously tiny. Somethings wrong. I'm worried.
