Pedophilia is not a crime

I know this seems like a hopelessly unrealistic dream, but I would love to someday rent a billboard to communicate a message that would simply state the following fact:

Pedophilia is not a crime.

I have encountered a surprising number of posts on various web sites, blogs, and even news articles, or headlines, etc, in which people make statements implying that pedophilia is a crime. I wish people would stop using phrases like "charged with pedophilia", or "convicted pedophile", or "crimes like pedophilia", etc. These kinds of statements make the term pedophilia synonymous with child molestation. It is incorrect usage of the term, it is inaccurate, and it really irks me.

A few examples of news headlines or from news articles below:

From www.associatedcontent.com: "Pedophilia is Not Funny: It is a Crime Against Our Children"

From an ABC news article: "A man who has advocated pedophilia, though he hasn't committed the crime..."

From www.allbusiness.com: "The pedophile is so completely lost in the contemplation of his particular crime that it totally dominates his life"

Pope John Paul II: pedophilia is "rightly considered a crime,"

From menstuff.org: To be accurate, pedophilia is the crime of sexually molesting a child of the opposite sex

From www.brazzilmag.com: Brazil Arrests American Charged with Pedophilia in Copacabana

From PerthNow: Australian tourist charged with pedophilia in Bulgaria | PerthNow11 Nov 2008 ... AN Australian man has been arrested in Bulgaria and charged with pedophilia.

All of the above examples (and these are just a few) are misusing the term "pedophilia" in a way that makes the word synonymous with child molestation. Whatever pedophilia may be, it is not a crime.
