Have a similar situation around these parts...my girl's best friend is nothing but trouble, and recently I convinced her to break off ties with this bad influence. It was for the best, for both girls, but I know that feeling of guilt that comes along with it. Thing is what are your alternatives? And will they lead to a better end? I know if the two of them remained friends, this girl would drive everyone away from my lgf, she was tainting her name already and turning people against her based on shear lies.

You should ask yourself what kind of reputation your daughter is gaining from spending so much time associating with a girl who is so mean to others. Do you really want people grouping your daughter with someone like her?? Also, you said you hope your daughter would be a good influence on this girl, have you ever thought maybe this girl is being a bad influence on your daughter?? It works both ways. I don't think your daughter is making a very good choice, and sometimes we as parents must look out for their long term interests. I am not there, but since you are I think you should consider these things.
