I am so sorry this is happening to you and your family. I'm sitting here actually dumbfounded that they actually came in and removed your son. I surely didn't think they would.

Now I know different states have different laws, but as far as I know, they can only take your child for 48 hours if they feel that the child is in eminent danger. After that they need an order from a judge. And since there will be no signs of any kind of abuse, I just dont see how they can keep him for longer than the 48 hours.

Luckily, as you said, he is young and hopefully wont be traumatized by this. Do whatever you have to to get him out of the system. You have a lawyer on your side already. So you have a leg up from what most people have. This isn't new to them. They already know about you. They are probably just trying to scare you, and more likely, scare your wife.
